February 17 we had a special evening at Gruvelageret. We made a menu based on the recipes from Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm. Lindstrøm was Chef on the most famous Norwegian expeditions, together with Norwegian heroes like Nansen, Amundsen and Sverdrup. He was known for his good mood and his way to make food light up the day, even when they are stuck in the ice for several years. We made a 4 course menu, and our own owner Steve was the Chef of the day, dressed up as Lindstrøm and serving us amazing courses, like soup with mosk ox and fish prepared like they did in the ice. Author Jan Ove Ekeberg who have written about about Lindstrøm told us about him and we also had live music,
In february 2017 we again had a concert at Gruvelageret during the Polar Jazz Festival; the Norwegian singer Øystein Greni entertained over 100 guests. Greni is known from the Norwegian band BigBang and has been very influential in Norwegian rock. The guests walked up to Gruvelageret with flaming torches lighting up the road in the dark. Greni gave us a beautiful intimate concert that was heartfelt, charming and mesmerizing.
After almost a year planning, finally with could great Robert Sandberg and Sebastian Lopez when they arrived Longyearbyen for our pop up-dinner the weekend October 14-15. Both have experience from several Michelin-star restaurant such as Maaemo and Frantzen. Robert Sandberg came directly from Greece where he had won Junior-VM: Young Chef of the Year. It was an amazing and valuable experience for the kitchen to cooperate with two so talented Chefs and the guests had an experience out of the ordinary with exciting flavors and an exquisite menu. We wish Robert Sandberg and Sebastian Lopez all the best for future events and hope to see them back in Longyearbyen some other time.
One of our locals from the western part of Norway asked if we could hold a traditional Norwegian “smalahovelag” in october, that means a party considering the Norwegian dish smalahove (sheephead). Since the smoked sheepheads had a long way to travel we had to have guests sign up in advance. We did not know what to expect, how many that would like to attend – turned out we were sold out a month in advance. With good help from our friend Marit it became a great night with a lot of food, songs, speeches, contest – and enough of the Norwegian liquor aquavit to go with the sheephead. We hope the ones that was on waiting list and did not get a place this year signs up for next year!
